Description Location: Philipp1, 30 minutes from Cape Town City, South Africa Car Required: Yes Start of internship: Year round Length of internship: 2 to 6 months Short description of internship: This organization was established in 1999 as a community-based organisation and is located in Cape Town in a township called Lower Crossroads with the focus on 3 core programmers: Community Support Programme: This is the programme that supports children and families directly, by running a children’s home and by helping to provide a children’s HIV clinic within the community. They aim to meet the physical, emotional, reunification, educational and recreational needs of children in their centre. Community Development Programme: This Programme aims to build skills and networks within the community, by running life skills and leadership skills for young people, providing information and referrals to families, such as social work services, parenting courses, a resource centre and networking with community based organisations. Organisational Support Programme: This Programme supports their services to children and families through Finance, Facilities, and Fundraising. Responsibilities Internship tasks are dependent on the following areas in which you work: Nursing: Collect medication boxes from all the cottages, dump dusting room and all rooms and do the laundry, clean syringes and boxes for medication, help with labels and dates for medication, help in preparation of children going on hospital appointments, check first aid boxes in all cottages under supervision, make photocopies for medical cottage and clinic, prepare hospital cards and their provision. Teaching/remedial-Assisting children with reading, writing, homework, resource use eg library, internet and providing spiritual guidance to them as part of the community support programme. Social Work-The intern will assist the Facility Social Worker and apply all skills learned in a Multi Disciplinary Team, observe and participate within the team when interviewing clients, doing home visits, communicating with client’s or service providers via phone, explore theoretical learning in practice and to record all activities daily on report formats and submit them to the Social Worker PR/Fundraising volunteer /intern-Assisting and coordination of events, meeting visitors, Desktop research for fundraising information /leads, talking to prospective sponsors, Approaching prospective companies and corporate through telephone and email, Using social networking tools to promote Beautiful Gate and connecting with BG friends, Research on new ideas and best practices in the field, Preparing drafts for articles and proposals and reports. This requires someone who is fairly multi skilled and flexible but with an interest to learn. Computer literacy, English proficiency and good communication skills and a positive and friendly attitude are the minimum requirements. Child and Youth Care Worker- Assessment of children for child participation/developmental assessments, Refer clients to other organisations, Assist with home visits, Assist with facilitating workshops/support groups and other administrative tasks.
